Amnesty International (Amnesty / Amnesty International) claims to Twitter failed to prevent violence and harassment online against women. Instead, Twitter is judged to create a 'toxic' environment for women.
Amnesty in a report published on Wednesday (21/3/2018), revealed Twitter responded inconsistently when the abuse case was highlighted, even when it violated its own rules. The report is published to coincide with 12 years since the first Twitter tweets were uploaded.
Quoted from The Guardian , Friday (23/3/2018), the human rights organization accused Twitter of failing to respect the rights of women, by not being able to interpret and enforce its policies to prevent toxic or negative content.
As a result, there are threats of murder, rape and racism, transphobia and homophobia against women.
The Amnesty report also contains a survey of 1,100 UK female respondents. As a result, only 9 percent think Twitter did enough to stop violence and abuse against women.
While 78 percent feel the service is not a place to channel their opinions without accepting, for example, harsh words.
Amnesty UK director, Kate Allen, confirms Twitter to be a toxic place for women.
"During this time, women on Twitter are easily faced with threats of death or rape, as well as their gender, ethnicity and orientation are attacked," Allen said.
Allen considers those who like to attack on Twitter are in a favorable position, because despite repeatedly promising, Twitter finally fails to stop them.
"Twitter should take concrete steps to address and prevent violence and harassment of women on its platform , otherwise its claims on women's side will not be meaningful," he explained.
The Amnesty report is based on interviews with more than 80 women, including politicians, journalists and regular users in the UK and the United States (US).
Public figures are often the target of attacks on Twitter, but there are also other users who are harassed, especially if they talk about sexism or use special campaign tags.
Amnesty also documents how women of ethnic or religious minorities, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI), non-binary individuals and disabilities, are often victims of abuse. This action is considered able to make a voice that has been marginalized, the farther from the public.
On the other hand, Twitter declared the type of approval with Amnesty's findings. Twitter reasoned his service could not remove the hatred and prejudices of the public.
Nevertheless, Tiwtter claims to have made more than 30 changes on the platform its in the past 16 months to make security better, including moving faster to handle tweets rated as harassing.
